A study by United States-based nonprofit Animal Charity Evaluators assessed that on average, a person adopting a vegan diet saves the lives of nearly 105 animals each year. Of the lives spared, approximately 92.5 are wild and farmed fish, 11.6 are farmed birds including chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys, and 0.6 are farmed mammals such as pigs, rabbits, sheep, goats and cows.

Entitled “The Effects of Diet Choices,” the analysis estimated that over 772 billion animals were slaughtered in 2018 for human consumption, basing the calculation primarily on data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

The authors noted that if adding the animals who died due to the indirect causes of meat production such as deforestation, the number of lives saved by a vegan is actually higher.

Our earnest appreciation, Animal Charity Evaluators. May everyone be kind stewards of our innocent animal friends to save lives and our planet through the noble diet of compassion, in God’s benevolence.
